Drowned Soulfire Ch. 1: The ArrivalI was always told that the sea was a treacherous place, but I never believed in that. I was a strong, independent woman. At age 31, I felt like I’ve seen everything in my life and travels. I certainly was not pushover, that is for sure. I knew that I needed to be capable of defending myself against any threats. I needed to always stay strong. Then again, this was easy for me. Nothing frightened me. During my journey home, I stumbled upon a wrecked ship as it leaned against some sea rocks. It was a dark and stormy night, rain poured from the heavens seemingly nonstop. Being the curious soul, I approached the scuttled vessel. When I saw movement, my curiosity turned to concern. Once I got aboard this mostly destroyed ship, I noticed a few surviving sailors here and there. All of them looked like they’d seen hell, all of them bleeding badly and all trembling with fright. I also noticed a few corpses scattered here and there across the broken and partially submerged deck…some bodies were even floating in the waters nearby. Something happened here, but it certainly didn’t look like a pirate attack. These men needed my help, and I was ready to aid them in any way I can. My long black coat flowed in the stirring winds. I was already soaking wet from the rain as some strands of my short, dark-brown hair stuck to my face. My brown eyes checked every part of this wreck. I noticed one particular sailor, bruised and bleeding, as he needlessly pulled on rope on a pulley. When I looked up, the mast attached to this pulley had snapped like a twig. The man was muttering to himself, incomprehensible orders about trying to get the ship moving. “Sir…?” I inquired, cautiously approaching the mumbling stranger. “Are you alright?” The injured sailor ignored me, still muttering his own orders to himself as he continued to pull on the rope. It accomplished nothing. This was perplexing and quite alarming. Whatever happened here must have really traumatized these poor sailors. To try to get this man’s attention, I even gently placed a hand on his shoulder. “Sir…what are you doing? You do realize that your ship is, err…run aground, right?” Finally, the man stopped what he was doing and looked at me. His eyes were still wide and fearful. “No.” he spoke with a shaky voice, “Beneath us. F-Foul breath…” I titled my head to the side in confusion. This man appeared to be rambling about nonsense again. But there was a twinge of seriousness when he said that. However, before I could ask him what he meant, I saw a body fall from one of the broken masts and crash upon the partially submerged deck with a splash. He was face down, crawling aimlessly. Immediately, I rushed towards the fallen man. “Oh my god! Sir, are you okay?” I knelt beside the man and tried to help him up. He wouldn’t budge, but he kept squirming around as if he was struggling to breathe. So, trying to assist him, I carefully rolled him over on his back…and nearly jumped back in alarm. Where there should have been this man’s face…was nothing but pure, twitching flesh. It was as if something wiped his face clean off and only leaving a patch of skin behind. He writhed and squirmed in silence, unable to breathe and I couldn’t do a damn thing to help him. I slowly stood back up and stepped back from the gruesome scene, unsure how to react to the slowly dying man before me. As I heard a crashing wave, I turned to see something unusual rise from the depths of the sea. It was a massive ship, breaching from the dark waters below. In all my years of traveling overseas, I never came across something as strange and as foreboding as this. The first thing that stood out was the bow of the ship as it was adorned with a skeleton holding a scythe. The bow even looked like a maw of a beast with jagged teeth. The second thing I noticed was its unusual color. The hull, the tattered sails…all of it was a shade of green. This was no doubt due to the various sea fauna presumably growing on this ship, but it was hard to tell from where I stood. Every carving I could see on this ship as the lightning illuminated the shadowy skies were intimidating in various ways. After all, this ship came from the darkest depths of the ocean…or even from hell itself. I just stood there in stunned awe, uncertain whether I saw right before me was real or not. The unknown, ghastly ship glided across the stormy waters as if it was nothing and approached the broken vessel I was on. Whoever…or whatever it was…it came for us. Instinctively, I clutched the golden dragon necklace I wore. “Down on your marrow bones and pray!” I was startled to hear such a gruff, aggressive voice from behind me. I turn around to see a group of men I knew for sure they were not there before. If they came from the mysterious, grim-looking ship...how did they board the scuttled ship I was on without anyone noticing? Due to the darkness of the stormy night, I was not able to see the features of these intruders very well. What I did know, however, was that they did not seem exactly human. They looked wrong, somehow. Before I could try to attempt deescalate the issue, one of the aggressive men rushed to attack me as he swung two pairs of chained iron balls. I quickly dodged out of the way and side-stepped. Thinking fast, I took the sheathed katana attached to my belt and armed myself. Soon, I had other enemies swarm at me as they tried to flank me from all sides. These attackers came at me with all sorts of weapons. Swords, axes, chains, harpoons, and other strange and usual armaments…they all came at me swinging. Luckily for me, I was not entirely defenseless, I had my trusted sword and I fought back for my life as hard as I could. The sounds of metal clinging against each other could be heard during the fight for survival. Rain poured over us all as the growls of thunder echoed in the blackened skies. Every move I made was careful, cautious, and wary. One tiny mistake, and I feared I would be dead. As I evaded, blocked, and parried as many oncoming swings against me as I could, I took a step back to avoid an aggressive swing from one of the attackers. The floor I stepped upon was partially covered in water and my black sturdy boots could not find traction on the deck’s slippery surface. When I tried to move again, I tumbled and fell backwards. I made a startled gasp before my head hit hard against the railing of the broken ship behind me…and my vision faded into darkness. The last thing I heard was the taunting and victorious cackles from my enemies as they surrounded me. , To my confused dismay, I regained consciousness. I could not believe I was left alive. My eyes slowly fluttered open and I looked around. My head throbbed in pain from hitting my head earlier. I was still on the same scuttled vessel. But I found myself on my knees and my wrists bound tightly together by rope. When I looked to my right, I saw the scared and wounded survivors from earlier as they were in the exact same position I was currently in. Our attackers lined us up for what I presumed to be for the slaughter. Was this some type of sick game to them? I glanced behind me to see that some of the enemy crew stood behind us with weapons in hand ready to “deal” with us if we tried to make a run for it or tried to fight back. Not that we could escape, we were stuck in the middle of the open seas. We had nowhere to go. When my vision finally cleared and the storm finally subdued, I was able to get a better look at our captors thanks to the moonlight shining down…and I was horrified to what they really were. These men appeared to be cursed by the sea itself. Each one of these beings were a twisted amalgamation of man and various sea creatures of all types with marine fauna growing on both their bodies and clothes. Even their weapons were covered in things like barnacles and coral. Some had more obvious traits than others that especially stood out. I noticed one cursed man appearing as half-man, half pufferfish. Another had what appeared to be half a ship’s wheel stuck to his back. One I couldn’t even recognize as entirely human as he was covered in seaweed and looked more like an unrecognizable beast. Even one man was entirely made of various types of coral. Every single one of these warped men had their unique appearance that made them stand out. But they all looked as if they lived deep beneath the ocean for many long years. While I thought this was a dire situation for myself, I figured I still had a chance to escape whatever fate awaited me with these ghastly and literal men of the sea. I came up with various plans of escape in my mind, playing each one of them repeatedly. Some might work, most might fail, and all were incredibly flawed. But I was desperate, hoping that one of my plans would- Thud…Thud…Thud… My thoughts were abruptly halted from the sounds of harsh and uneven footsteps coming from the left of me. I tried to take a quick glance to see who was approaching, but I quickly lowered my head and averted eye contact. While I did not take a good look at the figure, I…for some reason, was quickly intimidated by his presence alone. But what I did know…was that he was the captain of this cursed and monstrous crew. One of the cursed crewmen, a man mostly appearing to be half man and half-hammerhead shark, spoke to his captain with a sharp-tooth grin. “Four men still alive, the rest have moved on.” This especially peeked my concern. None of our captors realized that I was a girl, most likely due to the masculine outfit I wore. This, I assumed, bought me some protection. I feared that if any of them found out I was a woman, then my life would be immediately forfeit. For now, I kept quiet and my head down. I focused all my efforts to keep as calm and as composed as I possibly could. Meanwhile, their captain walked past each of his potential prey, fortunately passing right by me. He stopped right in front of one survivor, who was already trembling violently and whimpering. The foreboding man leaned close to his victim, speaking with a quiet yet harsh voice. I took the opportunity to slowly turn my head just enough to listen in, though I still could not get a good look at the captain quite yet. “Do you fear death?” the captain asked, leaning close to his victim as if to study him, “Do you fear that dark abyss? All your deeds laid bare? All your sins punished?!” he suddenly snorted aggressively before speaking again. “I can offer you…an escape.” It was then I realized what the purpose of this gathering was. This captain and his crew were looking for new recruits amongst dying and scared sailors. How these survivors got into this situation was unknown to me. I figured that the survivors were victims of an unfortunate test, and this was their prize…an offer to join amongst monsters. The survivor the captain was speaking to slowly calmed down and looked at him. The poor man, staring death straight in the face, was tempted to accept this sinister deal. “Don’t listen to him!” a brave survivor spoke up without hesitation. From the corner of my eye, I saw the captain approach this fearless man and grab him by the throat. Strangely, he did not sound displeased by his victim’s sudden outburst of defiance. It was as if he was expecting this sort of reaction from at least one of his prey. “Do you not…fear death?” he calmly asked. While the other survivor did not sound as brave as before, he stood his ground. “I-I’ll take my chances, sir.” The captain let the survivor go and turned towards one of his crewmen standing nearby. “To the depths.” He commanded. To my absolute horror, I watched from my peripheral vision as the beastly crewman standing behind the survivor grabbed the brave victim by the head before using a jagged blade to slit the man’s throat. Immediately, I turned my head away as I heard the vile crew laugh as they tossed the now-limp body into the unforgiving waters. “You cruel blackguard!” a third survivor cried out in angered fright. The captain sharply turned to the other survivor with an intimidating glare. “Life is cruel. Why should the afterlife be any different?” He was observing us remaining three victims, his attention went back to the first man he offered his deal to as he leaned close to him once more. “Join my crew and postpone judgement.” The survivor looked back up at his captor, still considering this offer to avoid death. “One-hundred years before the mast…” the captain continued, trying to win over this prey of his, “Will ye serve?” After a moment of silence, the man responded with an answer that surprised us all. “No.” The captain was taken aback for a moment. However, he did not seem phased by this either. He turned to one of his other crewmen, giving a nod to signal to kill the man as well. And just like that, this unfortunate sailor met a gruesome end by a slit of the throat. He, too, was tossed into the sea like he was nothing more than a waste. Without saying a word, the captain glared at the last surviving man, who also shook his head to deny his offer. Like the others before him, this victim died by with a throat slit and was tossed into the sea without much ceremony. While I could somewhat see what was going on with my peripheral vision, I kept my head down the entire time. I flinched every time I heard each survivor’s body tossed into the waters with a splash. My mind was racing. My heart pounded wildly in my chest. All I could think of was finding a way out of this waking nightmare. I needed to get out of this alive. “You.” I flinched as I heard the captain’s voice directly in front of me. I looked up at him and my blood ran cold as I finally got a good look at my captor looming over me. It was no wonder that the captain’s presence was so intimidating as he had the worse cursed appearance out of all his crew. His icy-blue eyes stared deep into my soul. However, his most striking feature was his grotesque face. It closely resembled that of a sickly-green octopus with a beard consisting of about forty tentacles of varying lengths (which none of them reached past his chest) that writhed and wriggled like snakes. Instead of a nose, there was a siphon-like appendage on the left side of his face. His dark-colored tricorne hat looked more like devil horns. Much like his crew, his dark clothes were covered in marina fauna like coral, barnacles, and the like from his hat right down to his boot. Though one could tell his clothes were a bit more formal than the rest of his crew. His left arm was a big crab claw. Since this claw was too big to fit his coat sleeve, the left sleeve was over his shoulder instead. His right hand was almost normal, except his skin was also light-ish green and the index finger was replaced with a long thick tentacle that moved with a life of its own…though for now, it coiled around the wrist. His right leg was a big crab leg, acting like a peg-leg of sorts. This explained why his footsteps sounded so uneven and heavy at times. He appeared to be about six feet tall, quite a few inches taller than I was. There was no ounce of compassion, kindness, pity, remorse, or any sort of sympathy from him. This ghastly captain was cruel, cold, and quite unfeeling. “You are neither dead nor dying. What is your purpose here?!” the captain demanded, looking straight down at me. His accent was strong and aggressive…sounding a bit Scottish even. I could barely understand what he was saying. Even then, he pronounced some words so weirdly, drawing some words out longer than others. For a moment, I was speechless. He knew I was not with the survivors just by looking at me. It could be perhaps I was not covered in my own blood. I didn’t even have a scratch on me. I tried to think of something…anything to respond with. The wheels of my thoughts turning and grinding in a frantic state. My eyes darted around in a panicked state. The tension was incredibly high and if I didn’t say anything or said something stupid…I would surely die. I took a deep breath before I finally spoke with a shaky voice. “W-Wrong place at the wrong time, sir.” I heard some of the crew surrounding me snicker at me mockingly. I could tell my answer was quite foolish to them. Their captain, however, frowned at me. His eyes narrowed as the tentacles of his beard curled and writhed about. After a moment, he gestures towards some of his crewmen behind me. Suddenly, two cursed crewmen held me down by the shoulders, keeping me from standing up as I knelt there helplessly. “Hold ‘er!” one of them snarled with a sickening glee. My heart skipped a beat. They knew I was a girl, probably from my voice when I spoke or it could have been my smaller figure that gave it away. I struggled as I began to panic. I could not stand up as I was forced to stay in the kneeling position. I couldn’t even pull my hands apart as the rope binding my wrists kept their tight grip. I had no idea what was going on…until I saw their captain slowly unsheathe his cutlass from the scabbard attached to his belt. He wasn’t even going to give me a chance to live. For the first time, I saw a slight hint of emotion from this cruel captain. The cold, callous grin on his face was empty and devoid of any joy. Although, there was not a doubt in my mind that it would please him to watch me die by his hand. He raised his right hand, the blade positioned towards my neck to strike me down. He quickly brought his sword down. “N-NO!” I cried out, bracing for my swift death. Much to my surprise…the captain stopped. The cutlass barely pressed against my neck. I looked up at him, confused as to why he stopped at the last second. Even the crewmen behind me let me go. Something was off, I could tell, but I could not figure out why.The captain tilted his head to the side, tentacles of his beard twisted and writhed as his lips curled slightly upwards into a smile devoid of true emotions. “Tell me, woman,” he growled, pronouncing the word ‘woman’ with pure disdain, “what is your name-uh?” With shortened breaths, I timidly answered, “M…M-My name is Silent. S-Silent Callisto…sir.” I heard the crew cackle as they heard my unusual name. It wasn’t too surprising of a response, but I was so tense, I couldn’t help but wince as they mocked me. “Silent…” the captain repeated, almost sounding amused as he returned his cutlass back in its scabbard. He leaned close to me, his face mere inches from mine. “It is said that the eyes are the window to the soul…” he paused, his unsettling grin widening, “…and your soul has gained my attention-uh.” I was perplexed by his cryptic response. I wasn’t sure what he meant. I thought quietly about this for a moment: Soul? Window? Eyes… My eyes…Oh my god! It suddenly clicked…and I was horrified. For most of my life, I had harbored and kept a secret, never to be known by anyone. However, one trait of my secret was an involuntary response I had. Anytime I was overwhelmed with fear, anger, or any other intense emotion, my eyes would change from brown-colored and human…to blue and draconic. And now, my involuntary reaction from nearly getting killed exposed that secret right in front of this cursed captain and his crew. This was why I was spared from a gruesome end…and it scared me. With a blink, I reverted my eyes back to normal and human in appearance. “Y-You were never supposed to see that, sir.” I quickly responded defensively. The captain cruelly chuckled at me. His malice sent a chill down my spine. “It is far too late for that…dragon.” My heart sank, feeling that I was in even more danger than before. So much more than my life was at stake. I heard hushed whispers from the crew, they were stunned and intrigued by this sudden revelation about myself. After another moment of silence, the captain spoke again. He sounded curious this time with a hint of that sadistic tone. “Silent, are you aware of who I am?” Another question from this captain baffled me. Why would he ask that? Then again, I suppose he was aware of my frightened bewilderment. “A-Are...are you some sort of devil?” I guessed nervously. The captain chuckled, even snorting a little, though it was not full or humor or joy. “I am not called the ‘Devil of the Seas’ for nothing, lass.” I cowered in fear, but one question remained. “W-Who are you?”With a light twitch of the head, the captain sneered. His smile was void of any emotion or feeling. “Davy Jones.” With this captain finally introducing himself, I felt my skin crawl. While I was not familiar with most sea legends or tales, I did hear this name before a few times in my life. Originally, I assumed it was a metaphor used by sailors and pirates for death at sea or even the devil. Now knowing I was wrong, I was left speechless. “Now tell me this,” Jones said, his grin never faltered, “do you fear death-uh?” I flinched as I dreaded this dark and foreboding question. “I…” I gulped nervously, trembling uncontrollably, “I-I now believe that there are far worse things than death, sir.” “Do you, now?” Jones retorted, almost sounding like he was mocking me, “What, for instance, would you consider worse than death?” He raised an eyebrow at me, studying my every reaction and my every move. Once again, I thought quietly about how to respond to this. Once I felt like I had my answer, I spoke nervously, “B-Being condemned…or losing one’s soul.” Jones gave me a curt nod as he took in my answer. “What do you suppose I should do with a dragon such as yourself?” he asked, almost in a teasing way. It’s like he already knew the answer, he just wanted to hear me guess. So, I took my chance to plead. “I…I now understand I never should have gotten myself involved in all this madness. I made a mistake, I know. P-Please, sir…if you let me go, I swear I’ll never cross paths with you again.” Now the entire crew laughed at me as I desperately begged for my release. Even Jones himself cruelly laughed at me. “Your freedom was forfeit the very instant you chose to get involved.” He paused, watching in amusement as any hope I had quickly vanished, “And as for how I intend to use you, that is something you will find out soon enough.” He looked toward his crew, motioning towards them with a wave of his right hand. Once again, two crewmen grabbed me from behind, tightly gripping my arms. I struggled a bit more wildly this time. My worst fears had come true. “No! No! NO! I won’t let you control me!” “I will not offer you a choice-uh!” Jones snapped, glaring at me. He glanced back at his crew, “Lock her in the brig.” Then, he turned his attention to me with a sickening grin. “Welcome to the crew, dragon.” Before I could retaliate or protest, I felt a blunt weapon bludgeon me from behind my head. My vision, once again, quickly faded to black. I was always told that the sea was a treacherous place, and now I realized why....
